Decision recursion: the option keeper

The decision felt settled on Friday. By Tuesday, the alternative looks attractive again. Nothing important has changed in the budget, the audience, or the deadline, but the original choice now feels strangely provisional. Work returns to comparison instead of moving into public view.

The term decision recursion describes that repeated reopening of an already adequate choice. Reconsideration prompted by new evidence, lost funding, or a changed goal responds to a different situation. The distinctive observation is a repeated cycle around the same choice when the underlying facts have stayed about the same.

Consider a writer who chose an essay topic, drafted the piece, and found a publication willing to review it. Before sending, he reconsiders whether the topic should be broader. After a new outline, he considers returning to the first version. Two weeks later, the publication has seen neither. This is a hypothetical example. It shows how the same choice can occupy several rounds of work while the planned submission waits.

The nearest neighbor is research extension. A person in a research loop keeps seeking additional evidence. A person in decision recursion can use the evidence already on hand and still reopen the decision. One may feed the other, but they are not identical. Nor is this the same as general indecisiveness. Someone may choose restaurants, jobs, and daily tasks easily while repeatedly revisiting one particular release decision.

Indecisiveness and decisional procrastination already have research literatures. Frost and Shows examined compulsive indecisiveness. Decision recursion focuses on the observable cycle near a consequential choice: an adequate decision is reached, reopened without a material change in the facts, and revisited while the external act remains undone.
